LAW CENTER CELEBRATES 20 YEAR ANNIVERSARY!

This issue marks the first of four Green Fire Reports that will celebrate the Law Center's 20th Anniversary over the next year.

Celebrating 20 Years

"Three former state officials have founded a Santa Fe based law firm to protect the haunting landscapes, precious streams, and splendid wildlife that have made New Mexico the land of enchantment.” So began a back-page story in the first Green Fire Report that was plainly titled “Environmental Law Center Opens,” in December, 1987. Read more.

 

Case Updates:

  • Law Center Helps Win Victories! New Mexico's surface waters and public lands are better protected now, after courts agreed with two friend-of-the court briefs filed by the Law Center in 2005. Read more.
  • “The NRC's decisions must be reversed because they fail to ensure that the public health, safety and the environment will be protected from air and groundwater contamination if HRI is allowed to mine uranium under its license.” Read more.
  • “The Phelps Dodge's Tyrone mine facility covers nearly 10,000 acres of land and sprinkles thousands of acre-feet of acidic solution onto the ore piles per year; the solution dissolves copper from the ore as it drains through the pile, and is then collected in the natural drainages underlying the piles. It is an imperfect process, however, since some of the acidic solution, dissolved metals and dissolved contaminants leak out, where they contaminate groundwater. Read more.
