Green Fire Report | Summer/Fall 2005

Law Center says Farewell to a Successful 2005

As we at the New Mexico Environmental Law Center bid farewell to 2005, we look back on a year filled with victories for our clients, court decisions that benefit all New Mexicans, new faces that have strengthened our ability to do our work, and some truly memorable events for our organization, including our fundraising dinner featuring entrepreneur Ted Turner.

We know that 2006 will hold many challenges, however. Already our opponents are working to reverse some of our victories, and we know that there will be new fights in the coming year. But we're already working to defend our progress, forge ahead on other cases, and girding ourselves for the 2006 state legislative session.

Major Community Victories Spring and Summer 2005 yielded significant success for several of the communities with which the Law Center works, including ENDAUM, Picuris Pueblo, and the community of Chaparral.

See details on these huge victories!

Victory in Mesquite "People ask me what we've gotten out of this. The biggest thing -- the most important thing -- is that they've listened to us. For once [the government] has listened to us!" So says Arturo Uribe of Mesquite, on the heels of his community's successful negotiation with the State and a multinational chemical company.

Find out more about Arturo's story here.

Ted Turner Event a Smashing Success Santa Feans turned out in style to welcome philanthropist and entrepreneur Ted Turner, who joined actor Wes Studi to honor the Navajo Nation and state Senator Cisco McSorley for their work to protect New Mexico's environment.

Executive Director's Column This summer, the New Mexico Supreme Court issued a decision pertaining to a landfill proposed for the colonia of Chaparral. The decision will have far-reaching ramifications not only for the citizens of Chaparral, but for communities throughout New Mexico.

Case Updates Giant copper pits, unstable rockpiles, petroglyph-eating roads and forward progress on promoting environmental justice in New Mexico. Find out the latest on our casework on the updates page.
